Agadir sits on Morocco’s Atlantic coast at the foot of the Anti-Atlas mountains, roughly 500 km south of Casablanca. A devastating 1960 earthquake destroyed most of the old town, and the city was rebuilt from scratch with wide boulevards, low-rise hotels and a long sandy beach, giving it a distinctly modern, resort-first character compared with Morocco’s older imperial cities. The Kasbah of Agadir Oufella, on the hill above the bay, is one of the few structures to survive the earthquake and now serves mainly as a viewpoint over the city and coastline. North of the centre, the fishing-village-turned-surf-town of Taghazout has grown into one of North Africa’s best-known surf destinations.

Getting around

Agadir’s beachfront promenade, marina and main hotel strip are easily walked or covered by petit taxi. Reaching Taghazout, Aourir or the surf breaks further north generally means a taxi, rental car or pre-booked transfer, since public transport options thin out once you leave the city centre. Traffic along the coast road can build up at weekends and during the winter-sun peak.

Best time to visit

Agadir markets itself as a year-round sun destination, and October to April draws the bulk of European winter-sun and surf travellers thanks to reliably mild, dry days when much of Europe is cold. Trade winds keep the height of summer from feeling as harsh as inland Morocco, though July and August are the warmest and busiest months on the beach itself.

Agadir Al Massira Airport (AGA) is a single-terminal airport about 24 km southeast of the city, handling both domestic and international arrivals through one integrated building.
