About Alicante
Alicante is the Costa Blanca’s provincial capital, built around a harbour, a long palm-fringed seafront promenade known as the Explanada de España, and the Santa Bárbara Castle looming over the old town from Mount Benacantil. Around 360,000 people live in the city, with the wider province of Alicante approaching 2 million and swelling far higher through the summer tourist season.
The historic Barrio quarter behind the town hall keeps its narrow lanes and tapas bars, while the Postiguet city beach sits a short walk from the centre, giving Alicante a genuine city feel that many of its beach-resort neighbours further up the coast lack.
Getting around
Central Alicante is compact and walkable, with the TRAM Metropolitano light rail linking the city to Benidorm and the northern Costa Blanca resorts, and regional trains and buses covering Elche and Murcia. Summer traffic on the AP-7 motorway toward Benidorm and Torrevieja can back up on peak changeover days, when a pre-booked transfer with a driver who knows the alternative routes is usually steadier than a rental car in unfamiliar traffic.
Best time to visit
May, June and September bring reliably warm, sunny weather without the crowds and heat spikes of July and August, when the Costa Blanca’s resort towns run at capacity. Winters are mild by northern European standards, drawing a steady stream of long-stay visitors, while spring and autumn are popular for golf and walking holidays inland.
Transferring from Alicante’s airport
Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC) is one of Spain’s busiest, about 12 km southwest of the city and operating from a single modern building, Terminal N, that replaced the older terminals in 2011. Pre-booked private transfers cover the whole Costa Blanca, with flight tracking, 60 minutes of free wait time and a fixed price that does not change for a late arrival.
Common transfer routes
Typical Alicante routes include:
- Alicante Airport to Alicante city centre, around 15 minutes.
- Alicante Airport to Benidorm, around 45 minutes.
- Alicante Airport to Torrevieja, around 40 minutes.
- Alicante Airport to Calpe, around 55 to 60 minutes.
- Alicante Airport to Elche, around 15 minutes.
Most travellers on this route are heading straight to a resort rather than staying in Alicante itself, so a direct airport-to-hotel transfer to Benidorm, Torrevieja or Calpe is the most commonly booked journey.
