Punta Cana is not a single town but a long stretch of coastline in the Dominican Republic’s easternmost province, La Altagracia, given over almost entirely to all-inclusive resorts. Bávaro Beach, backed by turquoise water and reef-protected shallows, anchors the busiest concentration of hotels, while Cap Cana to the south is a gated, marina-led development of villas and higher-end resorts, and Uvero Alto further north is quieter and less built up.

There is no traditional city centre in the way other destinations have one; life here revolves around resort strips, beach clubs and a handful of shopping plazas built for visitors rather than residents. The region has grown rapidly around tourism since the 1980s and is now one of the Caribbean’s busiest resort destinations.

Getting around

Almost every visitor stays inside a resort and rarely needs transport beyond the arrival and departure transfer, since most all-inclusive properties are largely self-contained. Public transport is limited and not designed for tourists, so a pre-booked private transfer straight from the airport to the resort gate is by far the most common way to travel, especially with luggage and after a long international flight.

Best time to visit

December to April is the dry season, with the most reliable sunshine and lower humidity, and is the peak booking period for European and North American winter escapes. June to November is hurricane season; storms are not constant, but rainfall is heavier and travel insurance and flexible booking matter more during these months. Sea temperatures stay warm (around 26 to 29 °C) year-round.
