About Tirana

Tirana is Albania’s capital and by far its largest city, a place that has changed shape dramatically since the fall of communism in 1990. Skanderbeg Square, named after the 15th-century national hero who resisted Ottoman rule, anchors the centre alongside the Et’hem Bey Mosque and the National History Museum, while brightly painted communist-era apartment blocks and a fast-growing skyline of modern towers sit close together. Around 600,000 people live in the municipality, with the wider Tirana district approaching 800,000.

South of the centre, the Blloku district, once reserved for Communist Party officials and off-limits to ordinary citizens, is now the city’s liveliest area for cafés, bars and boutique shopping.

Getting around

Central Tirana is walkable, with a growing bus network covering the outer districts, though the city has no metro or tram system. Roads into and out of the centre can be congested at rush hour and the layout is still adapting to rapid growth, so a pre-booked private transfer with a driver who already knows the route is usually more predictable than hailing a taxi with luggage after a flight.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October bring the most comfortable temperatures for walking the city and day-tripping to the coast, avoiding both the summer heat and winter rain. July and August are hot and are when most beach travellers head for Durrës and the wider Adriatic and Ionian coastlines, while Tirana itself stays a year-round destination for city breaks.

Transferring from Tirana’s airport

Tirana International Airport “Nënë Tereza” (TIA), also known as Rinas after the village where it sits, is Albania’s only major international gateway, about 17 km northwest of the city centre. It operates from a single terminal handling all arrivals and departures. Pre-booked private transfers cover the city and the coast, with flight tracking, 60 minutes of free wait time and a fixed price that holds regardless of arrival time.

Common transfer routes

Typical Tirana routes include:

  • Tirana Airport to Skanderbeg Square and the city centre, around 30 minutes.
  • Tirana Airport to Durrës, around 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Tirana Airport to Golem beach, around 50 to 60 minutes.
  • Tirana city centre to Durrës, around 45 minutes.

Many travellers pair a Tirana city stay with a beach extension on the Durrës coast, and both legs can be booked as separate fixed-price transfers rather than a single long detour on arrival day.
