About Chania

Chania is western Crete’s largest town and former capital of the island, built around a Venetian harbour lined with the 16th-century lighthouse, Firka Fortress and pastel merchant houses that now hold tavernas and small hotels. Behind the town rise the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), snow-capped well into late spring and the starting point for the Samaria Gorge, one of Europe’s longest canyons.

The old town’s population sits around 55,000, with the wider municipality closer to 110,000, roughly a sixth of Crete’s total. West of Chania, a long sandy coastline runs through Agia Marina and Platanias to Kolymbari, backing the island’s other main tourist strip.

Getting around

The old harbour and narrow lanes of the old town are entirely walkable, and buses run along the coast road to the western resorts and east toward the airport. Traffic on the coast road slows in July and August, and evening bus frequency drops, so for a late arrival or an early transfer to a resort west of town, a pre-booked private transfer is the more predictable choice.

Best time to visit

May, June, September and October bring warm, settled weather without the peak-summer crush, and are ideal for hiking Samaria Gorge, which is typically open May to October depending on conditions. July and August are hot (often 30 to 35 °C) and busiest at the beaches. Winter is mild on the coast but wet and cool, with snow still visible on the White Mountains into spring.
