About Kos

Kos is the third largest of the Dodecanese islands, with an island-wide population of around 37,000, close to 60% of whom live in Kos Town, the harbourfront capital dominated by the Castle of the Knights and the plane tree traditionally linked to Hippocrates, the ancient physician born here. The town’s marina, Roman agora ruins and palm-lined seafront make it an easy base for a first night or last night before flying home.

Beyond the town, Kos is a long, narrow island with resort strips on both coasts: Kardamena and Kefalos to the south, Tigaki, Marmari and Mastichari to the north, plus the thermal Embros Therme springs near Agios Fokas and the Asklepieion healing sanctuary just outside Kos Town.

Getting around

Kos Town’s old quarter and marina are easily walked or cycled, and a coastal bike path runs much of the island’s north side. Public buses connect the airport, Kos Town and the main resorts, but services thin out in the evening and on Sundays. Charter arrivals in peak season often land after the last convenient bus, so a pre-booked private transfer that meets the flight is the simpler option for reaching a resort at the far end of the island.

Best time to visit

May, June and September offer warm, settled weather without the peak-August crowds and heat, which can push past 33 to 35 °C inland. The beach season runs roughly May to October, with the sea warmest in August and September. Winter is quiet, with many hotels, tavernas and the ferry timetable scaling right back from November to April.

Transferring from Kos’s airport

Kos Airport (KGS), also known as Hippocrates Airport after the island’s most famous ancient resident, is a single-terminal airport near Antimachia, roughly central on the island and about 24 km from Kos Town.
