Willemstad is the capital of Curaçao and the island’s only real city, its historic core split by Sint Anna Bay into the districts of Punda and Otrobanda. The pastel-coloured Dutch colonial merchant houses along the Handelskade waterfront are one of the Caribbean’s most photographed street scenes and, together with the surrounding old town, form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around 130,000 people live in and around Willemstad, roughly 90 percent of the island’s total population.

The Queen Emma pontoon bridge swings open for ship traffic and closed for pedestrians linking Punda and Otrobanda, and the floating market along the Punda waterfront still sells produce brought in by boat from Venezuela.

Getting around

Willemstad’s old town is walkable, and buses (known locally as “konvoi”) connect the wider island, though services thin out heading toward the quieter west end. Most visitors renting a car or booking transfers do so because Curaçao’s beaches, dive sites and Christoffel National Park are spread across the island rather than clustered near the capital, so a pre-booked private transfer from the airport straight to a resort in Jan Thiel or further out is the common pattern.

Best time to visit

Curaçao sits south of the Caribbean hurricane belt, so it is a viable destination nearly year-round, but December to April remains peak season for the Dutch and wider European winter-sun market, combining reliably dry weather with the busiest flight schedules. May to November is warmer and quieter, with only an occasional chance of a passing storm.
